House calls on government to commit to renewal funding for older homes

A Private Members motion asking the government to commit to renewal funding for older B and C class long term care homes was passed unanimously in the House yesterday.

The motion, set forward by Elizabeth Witmer, MPP for Kitchener-Waterloo, read:

“That, in the opinion of this House, the Government of Ontario should commit to a plan of action to invest in an effective capital renewal program for Ontario’s 35,000 older LTC beds (structurally classified as B and C beds) so that they meet the 1998 design standards and so that all residents can have a home to live in with the comfort and dignity they deserve.”

The motion was seen by OLTCA members as a welcome gesture of political support by the House.

“This is an important issue that impacts access to long term care services for residents, families, and communities all across Ontario,” says Karen Sullivan, OLTCA Executive Director, in a press release. “We believe they will welcome this unanimous support from all parties and will now look forward to government announcing and implementing an effective capital renewal program for their B and C home.”
