Southampton seniors enjoy antique car show
Monday August 13, 2007 -- Natalie Miller
Residents stepped back in time recently at Southampton Care Centre, courtesy of an antique car show held at the long-term care home.
Seniors made their way outdoors to peruse more than 25 antique and vintage muscle cars and motorcycles brought to the nursing home by the local cruisers’ car club.
“We appreciate that these folks are bringing their cars straight from work so they are served a supper barbecue and great door prizes to keep their cars shiny and in top shape,” says Brenda Misch, director of activities at the Jarlette Health Services long-term care home in Southampton.
The event began four years ago, says Misch, through Jarlette’s Make-a-Wish program. It was the wish of one of the home’s male residents.
“This annual event began as one of
our resident’s (wishes). It’s an event that (meets) the needs of our gentleman residents but the ladies love it too,” says Misch. “The weatherman was in full co-operation and as usual the southampton shoreline offers the best sunsets over the shores of Lake
Huron.”
Staff arranged to play tunes from the fifties and sixties to go along with the theme. Next year, says Misch, staff will encourage the car owners to dress in the decade appropriate to their vehicle.
