Growing Together: The Intergenerational Horticulture Program

Rooted in Friendship: Growing Bonds Across Generations

Location: Sarnia, Ontario

At Vision ’74 Nursing and Rest Home, seniors and children from Boys and Girls Club Sarnia Lambton came together to garden – and in the process, built meaningful connections. More than just planting seeds, the Intergenerational Horticulture Program fostered friendships, joy, and a sense of community.

Bringing Generations Together

Designed by Vision’s recreation and social work teams, the nine-week program sparked engagement through gardening. With guidance from Registered Horticultural Therapist Guinevere Kern, staff from Vision and the Boys and Girls Club learned how horticulture can spark memories, inspire creativity, and strengthen bonds.

The whole community played a role in its success. DeGroots Nurseries provided materials and hosted a hands-on learning day, making each session more interactive and rewarding. The sessions covered fundamental horticulture topics, hands-on gardening, and outdoor exploration.

Memorable Moments

For many, the program was a highlight of their week. One senior called it “the best part of my week,” while a child said it was their “favorite day of camp.” Staff and volunteers also gained a deeper appreciation for intergenerational engagement.

Growing a Lasting Impact

This program showed how gardening can bring people together, break down barriers, and create lasting memories. While funding has been secured to continue this program into the summer of 2025, the partners are looking for opportunities to keep growing the program, just like the friendships it helped cultivate.
